Gender Bias in Immunization Program Target Women; But Men are the Carriers for Cancer-Causing HPV

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), an estimated 300 million women worldwide have HPV infection, which is the leading cause of cervical cancer and anal cancer in men who have sex with men (MSM).

While the HPV vaccination is readily accessible, most research and immunization focus on women, even though men are carriers of the illness. Awareness, prevention, and control actions for the virus are frequently oriented toward the female population, potentially due to a lack of understanding and possible taboo among the male population.

Although women are at a higher risk of getting HPV-related malignancies than men, research shows that men have a considerably higher prevalence of the HPV virus than women. It has also been observed that men frequently heal from HPV-related infections over time. Also, they are generally asymptomatic and disease carriers.

As a result, the findings of several studies have emphasized the need for broadening HPV vaccine coverage and increasing surveillance in the male population. These findings have shown that raising awareness and routinely vaccinating male populations ages 9 to 26 against HPV can result in significant improvements in public health.

Additionally, to achieve comprehensive immunization against the sickness, both male and female populations must be vaccinated. Family physicians and schools should conduct immunization programs and encourage males to be vaccinated. This will help break down taboos connected with HPV, such as anogenital and oropharyngeal cancer risks from HPV, which are typically linked with LGBTI groups.
